| Nach einem Unfall mit einem Gangster muß der sanftmütige und unentschlossene Suzuki, Angestellter in einer Autoverleihfirma, einen Yakuza-Unterschlupf aufsuchen. Gerade als der Schläger aufstehen will, um Suzuki in einer Art Vergeltungsaktion alle Finger zu brechen, explodiert die Räuberhöhle. Durch die Kraft der Explosion werden fast alle anwesenden Gangster getötet. Inzwischen wird die unauffällige, schüchterne Krankenschwester Shizuko von ihren Kolleginnen unaufhörlich gehänselt. Schließlich sucht sie in einen Supermarkt Zuflucht, wo sie von ihrem ‘neuen Ich’ träumt. Shizuko wird zur Unfallstelle des explodierten Hauses gerufen, wo sie den leicht verwundeten Suzuki entdeckt. Sie hilft ihm in den Krankenwagen, wo sie auf einen weiteren Überlebenden treffen: den Gangster vom Unfall, der im Koma auf einer Bahre liegt. Nun überschlagen sich die Ereignisse. Plötzlich befinden sich Suzuki und Shizuko mit einem Koffer voller blutdurchtränkter Geldscheine auf der Flucht. Doch an ihre Fersen haben sich Gangster und eine Gruppe glückloser Hooligans geheftet. Regisseur Yaguchi, der in diesem Film mit zwei jungen Stars des japanischen Films arbeitet, bringt eine außerordentliche Portion Realität in die zunehmend absurden Situationen, die das Drehbuch vorgibt. So entsteht ein raffinierter Cocktail aus sardonischem Sozialkommentar und trockenem Martini-Witz. |
After an unfortunate accident with a gangster in a black Jaguar, Suzuki, a meek and indecisive rental car clerk, is forced to visit the yakuza’s lair. The thug stands up ready to exact retribution by breaking all of Suzuki’s fingers when a violent explosion rips through the den, killing off the whole gang... almost. Meanwhile, Shizuko, a plain, timid nurse, is stuck behind her glasses on the night shift at a local hospital. The other nurses on the shift tease her relentlessly, driving her to seek refuge at the local convenience store where she dreams of the ‘new self’ predicted by her horoscope. Called to the ruined building by the explosion, Shizuko discovers Suzuki, dazed and slightly wounded. She helps him into an ambulance. They are joined by the only other survivor, the Jaguar driver, who hovers near death, lying unconscious on a stretcher... Suddenly, all hell breaks loose. Soon Suzuki and Shizuko are on the run with a trunk full of bloody cash, and the mobster and a bunch of hapless hooligans in hot pursuit ... Working with two of Japan’s hottest young stars, Yaguchi injects a compelling dose of reality into the increasingly absurd situations laid out by his script. Masanobu Ando who debuted as the star of Takeshi Kitano’s Kid’s Return delivers a smashing performance as a loser emerging from his shell. Hikari Ishida, a television star, is his perfect foil. She sheds her nervy glasses and meek behaviour faster than you can yell ‘take the money and run’. Written, edited and directed by Japan’s master of wry comedy, Adrenaline Drive is a sly cocktail of sardonic social commentary and dry martini wit. / Biofilmography Shinobu Yaguchi wurde 1967 geboren und studierte Graphikdesign an der Tokioter Hochschule für Kunst und Design. Bereits während des Studiums begann er eine Laufbahn als Filmemacher, drehte eine Anzahl von 8mm- und Videofilmen und arbeitete zeitweise als Ausstattungs-Assistent. 1990 gewann er mit seinem 8mm-Film Ame-Onna/Rain Woman den Großen Preis des Pia-Filmfestivals. Als Spielfilmregisseur debütierte er zwei Jahre später mit Down the Drain, den er u.a. dank eines Stipendiums des Pia Film Festivals realisieren konnte. Yaguchis zweiter Spielfilm My Secret Cache lief 1997 im Internationalen Forum des Jungen Films in Berlin. Shinobu Yaguchi was born in 1967 and enrolled in the Tokyo University of Art and Design as a design major, but he soon launched his career as a filmmaker. While turning out a number of 8mm and video works, Yaguchi took on part time jobs at film studios as an assistant to the production designer. In 1990, he received the Grand Prize at the Pia Film Festival for his 8mm Amo-Onna / Rain Woman. Yaguchi's first feature film was Down the Drain which was made on a Pia Film Festival's scholarship program. His second feature film, My Secret Cache, was shown during the International Forum of New Cinema in Berlin in 1997.
