| Stan Brakhage ist eine lebende Legende, womöglich der wichtigste Filmemacher der Avantgarde und einer der größten Künstler unserer Zeit. Seit 1952 – damals neunzehn Jahre alt – hat Brakhage über 300 Filme geschaffen, die – einige wenige Sekunden, andere mehrere Stunden lang – beständig und ausdauernd die Form der Filmkunst neu definieren. Brakhage beschreibt das visionäre Genie dieses Filmemachers, die exquisite Strahlkraft seiner Filme, seinen magischen Charme, seine künstlerischen Mitstreiter und den Einfluß, den sein Werk auf Generationen anderer Künstler ausgeübt hat. Der Film zeigt entscheidende Momente in Brakhages Leben und erforscht die außergewöhnlichen ästhetischen Möglichkeiten des Kinos. Brakhage enthält Ausschnitte aus Filmen von Brakhage und anderen Avantgarde-Filmemachern (etwa von George Kuchar, Jonas Mekas, Willie Varela, Bruce Elder u.a.); Interviews mit Brakhage, seiner Familie, seinen Freunden, Kollegen und Kritikern; Archivaufnahmen von Brakhage aus den letzten fünfunddreißig Jahren sowie Aufnahmen von Dreharbeiten. Die Originalmusik zu diesem Film wurde komponiert von dem bekannten Avantgarde-Komponisten James Tenney, einem langjährigen Mitarbeiter Brakhages. “Brakhage ist eine überzeugende Analyse der Tiefe und Breite seiner Kunst und seiner Position innerhalb der Welt der Avantgarde. Stan Brakhage is a living legend, possibly the most important filmmaker of the avantgarde, and one of the greatest artists of our time. Since 1952, at the age of nineteen, Brakhage has created over 300 films, ranging from several seconds to several hours, constantly and consistently redefining the shape of film art. Brakhage explores the filmmaker’s genius, the exquisite splendour of his films, his magic personal charm, his aesthetic fellow travellers, and the influence his work has had on generations of others creators. While touching on significant moments in Brakhage’s biography, the film celebrates Brakhage’s visionary genius and explores the extraordinary artistic possibilities of cinema, a medium mostly known only for its commercial applications in the form of narratives, cartoons, documentaries, and advertising. Brakhage combines excerpts from Brakhage’s films and films of other avant-garde filmmakers (e.g. George Kuchar, Jonas Mekas, Willie Varela, Bruce Elder, and others); interviews with Brakhage, his friends, family, colleagues, and critics; archival footage of Brakhage spanning the past thirty-five years; and location shooting in Boulder, Colorado and New York. An original score was composed for the film by long-time Brakhage associate and noted avant-garde composer James Tenney. “Brakhage is a compelling examination of the depth and breadth of his art, his personal charm, aesthetic influence and his position within the avant-garde world.
