The Cruise is a layered portrait of Timothy ‘Speed’ Levitch, an eccentric tour bus guide and his tempestuous love affair with the city. Beginning with his life atop double-decker buses, Speed’s tours exhibit a peculiar intimacy with the city’s historical and artistic lineage as well as its architectural feats. Each tour he leads is another chance for him to broadcast his lust for the city from the top of a double-decker bus, a chance to initiate unsuspecting tourists into the orgy of life and individuality the city represents. The Cruise captures both the wistful soliloquizing and the exhibitionistic grandstanding of Levitch as he verbally explores the anatomy of the city, as only a lover can. When Levitch rails against the perfectly rectangular organization of avenues and streets in New York, he is not criticizing inanimate objects but a civilization that values conformity above the individuality he so fiercely celebrates. As Levitch leads us through the landmarks and the alleys of the city, Miller deftly captures the layers of Levitch’s peculiar personality and uncovers the purity within his tormented soul. Levitch exposes himself to be a resilient, vulnerable, humorous writer and poet who lives his art. Biofilmographie / Biofilmography Bennett Miller wurde 1966 in New York geboren. Nach seinem Abschluß an der New York University im Fach Film arbeitete er als Regieassistent von Jonathan Demme und Ed Saxon, drehte einige Musik-Videos sowie Werbefilme für bekannte Industrieunternehmen – womit er allerdings nicht besonders glücklich war. Miller war schon im Begriff, mit dem Filmemachen ganz aufzuhören, als er gebeten wurde, einen kurzen Dokumentarfilm über die 'American Foundation for AIDS Research' zu machen, und er entdeckte seine Liebe zum Dokumentarfilm. Innerhalb eines Jahres stellte er seine sämtlichen anderen Tätigkeiten ein, machte 'Speed' Levitch zu seinem Thema und begann mit der Arbeit an THE CRUISE. Bennett Miller was born in New York in 1966. After attending NYU Film School, he worked as an assistant to Jonathan Demme and Ed Saxon, he then directed and edited a number of music videos, directed high-end corporate industrials and through it all was not particularly happy. Miller was on the verge of leaving filmmaking altogether when he was asked to produce a short historical documentary for the American Foundation for AIDS Research. It was then that Miller discovered his love for documentary filmmaking. Within a year he dropped everything, chose Speed Levitch as a subject and began work on THE CRUISE.
