Der viermonatige Marsch von Hong Kong nach Peking im Frühjahr 1997 dient Evans Chan als Prisma, durch das er die vielfältigen Gegenströmungen in Hong Kong beobachtet, die als Reaktion auf die Rückgabe der britischen Kronkolonie an China entstanden. Mit einem bittersüßen Blick auf die letzten Momente einer langen historischen Entwicklung läßt der Regisseur einzelne Teilnehmer zu Wort kommen, so z.B. einen ehemaligen Piloten, der einmal Deng Xiao Ping geflogen hat, eine Frau, die die Auflösung der Sowjetunion miterlebte, und einen Mann, der die Liebe zu seiner Frau mit einer Trennung auf die Probe stellen will. Zwischen den Aufnahmen, die den Verlauf der Wanderung dokumentieren – von Maos Geburtststätte, den Gelben Fluß entlang bis zum Platz des Himmlischen Friedens und der Großen Mauer – vermittelt er Einblicke in die sich verändernde Stadt Hong Kong mit ihren Künstlern und Unternehmern, ihren Umweltsorgen, dem politischem Exil in Kalifornien und unnachgiebigen Demokraten, die bleiben... “Der Film verbreitet keine Paranoia oder Unheilsprophezeiungen, sondern liefert einen realistischen Querschnitt der Ansichten über Hong Kong und ein Nachdenken über den Unterschied zwischen Chinas Obsession, ‘das Gesicht nicht zu verlieren’, und Hong Kongs eher pragmatischer Bereitschaft, sich mit den schwierigen Realitäten auseinanderzusetzen.” Tony Rayns	A four month philanthropic walk from Hong Kong to Beijing, between February 16 and June 15, 1997, became the prism through which writer-director Evans Chan views the rainbow-hued crosscurrents of a Hong Kong gearing up for decolonization on July 1, 1997 – when Britain handed the colony back to China. In this bittersweet look at the last leg of a sweeping historical journey that dates back to the Opium Wars, the filmmaker speaks to Hong Kong walkers such as an ex-aviator who once flew Deng Xiao Ping, a woman who witnessed the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and a man testing his love for his wife through separation. Interposed with the walk as it passes through Mao’s birthplace, the Yellow River, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall are glimpses of a mutating Hong Kong – artists and entrepreneurs, environmental worries and post-colonial sexuality, political exile in California and angry democrats who stay put... “No raving paranoia or alarmism, just a humane and grounded spot sample of attitudes on Hong Kong’s far from mean streets and a contemplation of the space between the Mainland obsession with ‘face’ and Hong Kong’s more pragmatic willingness to deal with troublesome realities. Biofilmographie / Biofilmography *Evans Chan* wurde 1960 in Guangdong, China, geboren und wuchs in Hongkong auf. Er schloß sein Studium an der New School for Social Research in New York mit einem Magister in Philosophie ab. Seit 1984 lebt er sowohl in New York als auch in Hongkong; 1990 gründete er seine eigene Produktionsfirma. Er arbeitet als Journalist, Schriftsteller und Regisseur. JOURNEY TO BEIJING ist sein erster Dokumentarfilm. Evans Chan was born in 1960 in Guangdong, China and raised in Hong Kong. He graduated from the New School for Social Research in New York City with a M.A. in philosophy. Since 1984 he has divided his time between New York and Hong Kong. In 1990 he formed his own production company. He works as a critic, novelist and director of two feature films. JOURNEY TO BEIJING is his first documentary.
