| Juha basiert auf einem Roman des berühmten finnischen Schriftstellers Juhani Aho. Er wurde 1911 geschrieben und bereits dreimal verfilmt. Eigentlich spielt er im 18. Jahrhundert und beschreibt die Dreiecksgeschichte zwischen einem alten Mann, seiner jungen Frau und einem russischen Händler, der eine Art Casanova ist. Das Buch hat eine enorme melodramatische Dimension. Ich wollte es bereits seit einigen Jahren verfilmen. Es gab sogar einmal den Plan, die Geschichte in den Bergen Portugals zu drehen. Doch ich wußte zuwenig über den Alltag der Menschen in diesem Landstrich, und so gab ich auf. Erst als ich mich mit dem Komponisten Anssi Tikanmäki darauf verständigte, eine weitere alte Idee mit Juha zusammenzubringen, nämlich einen Stummfilm zu drehen, nahm das Projekt Gestalt an. Was den Stil der Kameraführung und der Schauspieler angeht, habe ich zeitlich gesehen um 1928 angefangen und tendiere gegen Ende des Films zu den B-movies der fünfziger Jahre. Es gab für mich keinen Grund, den Stummfilm zu imitieren. Das haben andere bereits probiert - wenn auch ohne Erfolg. Stattdessen habe ich meine Art von Film gemacht, vielleicht ein wenig altmodischer als sonst und ohne realistischen Ton – ohne Erfolg… Aki Kaurismäki |
Juha is based on a novel by the great Finnish writer Juhani Aho. It was written in 1911 and has been filmed three times before.The story is originally set somewhere in the 18th Century and it tells of a love triangle between an older man, his young wife and a Russian salesman, a kind of Casanova. The melodramatic level of the book is enormous. For years I wanted to turn this book into a film. Once I even planned to make it in the Portuguese mountains, but I gave up because I lacked knowledge of local everyday habits and details. But only after an agreement with Anssi Tikanmäki, the composer, to add Juha to another old idea (a silent movie), could I go forward. To my mind Chaplin`s Modern Times (1936) is the last silent film wich succeeded, and now I understand why; it is not so easy. We have lost the purity of storytelling in the backyard of words. For Juha I studied about one hundred silent movies and I found out that the people who say the cinema has only gone backwards since the talking started are right. I placed my version of Juha at a moment in the history of silent film when some sound could already be used, but voice synchronization wasn't yet possible. It was the moment just before The Jazz Singer, and just afterwards because sound film took time to be established, especially in some countries. As far as the images and the acting style are concerned I start somewhere in 1928, and towards the end I let it slowly slide into the 50's B-movie style. I saw no reason to start imitating silent movies. It has been tried, but unsuccessfully.
