Die Geschichte eines Uhrmachers. Die Lupe, die er benutzt, um das Uhreninnere zu erkennen, wird allmählich zu einem untrennbaren Teil von ihm. Er beginnt alles um sich herum stark vergrößert wahrzunehmen. Der Uhrmacher ist Witwer und steht zusammen mit seiner Tochter in engem Kontakt zu seiner Jugendliebe und deren Tochter. Dieses kleine Mädchen wird eines Tages vergewaltigt und ermordet. In seiner Verzweiflung darüber tötet der Uhrmacher den Mann, den er für den Täter hält. Er wird verurteilt und kommt ins Gefängnis. Eines Tages sieht er durch ein kleines Loch in der Gefängnismauer und durch seine Lupe, wie ein Gefängniswärter ein Mädchen verfolgt und vergewaltigt. Als er dem Wärter kurz darauf begegnet, gerät er völlig außer sich und schlägt ihn zusammen. Man trennt die beiden mit Gewalt. Auf die Fragen des Gefängnisdirektors nach den Gründen seines Handeln zeigt er ihm das Loch in der Wand… “Das Vergrößerungsglas ist eine Liebesgeschichte mit melodramatischem Ende – und ein Beispiel für das wundersam wiederbelebte Erzählkino in Südindien. The magnifying glass which he uses to look at the inside of the watch slowly becomes an integral part of himself. He starts seeing everything around him in a highly magnified manner. The watchmaker is a widower whose wife died of a snakebite a long time ago. He and his daughter are close to his first love and her daughter. One day this little girl is raped and murdered. In his despair the watchmaker kills the man he considers the perpetrator. He is condemned and goes to prison. One day, while looking out through a hole in the prison wall, using his magnifying glass, he sees a group of blind people on a nearby hill. Among the group, the only person with sight is a young girl who resembles the dead girl. The watchmaker makes it a habit to go to the hole and watch the group whenever he can. One day he sees through the magnifying glass that the prison warden chases the girl and rapes. The sight of the warden a short while later makes him lose control. He attacks him and beats him up until others forcibly separate the two. When the prison director asks him why he did this, he explains his reasons. The watchmaker then takes the director to the hole… “The Magnifying Glass is a love story with a melodramatic ending – and an example for the wonderfully revived narrative cinema in Southern India. Biofilmographie / Biofilmography *Ambazhathil Karanakuran Lohithadas* wurde am 10. Mai 1955 in Chalakkudi (Südindien) geboren. 1985 begann er Geschichten für das Malayalam-Theater zu schreiben. Seit 1987 verfaßt er Drehbücher für das Malayalam-Kino. Sein erstes Drehbuch, Thaniyavarthanam, wurde von dem Regisseur Sibi Malayil mit Muhammed Kutty Mammootty in der Hauptrolle verfilmt. In zehn Jahren hat er dreiunddreißig Drehbücher geschrieben, von denen vier von jungen Regisseuren verfilmt wurden. Das dreiunddreißigste, BHOOTHAKANNADI, brachte er selbst auf die Leinwand. *Ambazhathil Karanakuran Lohithadas* was born on May 10th, 1955 in Chalakkudi (South India). In 1985 he started writing stories for Malayalam Language Drama. Since 1987 he has been writing scripts for Malayalam language Cinema. His first screen play, 'Thaniyavarthanam', was filmed by the director Sibi Malayil with Muhammed Kutty Mammootty in the lead role. In ten years he has written thirty-three film scripts. Four of these were filmed by new directors. He has directed his thirty-third script BHOOTHAKKANNADI himself.
