Martino arbeitet als Nachtwächter in der Mole, dem Turiner Filmmuseum. Nach Mitternacht betrachtet er sich als Herr über diesen Ort und pflegt sich bis zum Morgengrauen Stummfilme anzusehen. Anschließend zieht er sich dann gewöhnlich in ein leerstehendes Büro zurück und verbringt dort den Rest des Tages. 'Engel' ist ein kleiner Dieb aus der Vorstadt. Er hat eine Schwäche für Autos und Frauen, worüber seine Freundin Amanda nicht sehr glücklich ist. Sie würde gerne ein geregeltes Leben führen und in eine bessere Gegend ziehen, befürchtet aber, dass ihr beides versagt bleiben wird. Eines Tages gerät sie in Schwierigkeiten und findet auf der Flucht vor der Polizei Unterschlupf in der Mole. Der an Einsamkeit gewöhnte Nachtwächter teilt sein Zuhause nun plötzlich mit einer jungen Frau. Amanda ihrerseits hätte es niemals für möglich gehalten, dass ein solches Reich der Träume existiert. Aber dann macht sich 'Engel' auf die Suche nach seiner Freundin. Davide Ferrario: “Dopo Mezzanotte ist ein freundlicher kleiner Film über einen sehr sonderbaren Ort, entstanden aus Liebe zur Filmgeschichte – und besonders zu Buster Keaton. Er wurde mit sehr wenig Geld, in sehr kurzer Zeit und mit viel Enthusiasmus produziert. Vielleicht liegt es gerade daran, dass er einer meiner persönlichsten Filme geworden ist. Setzen Sie sich einfach hin, öffnen Sie die Augen und überlassen Sie sich dem Fluss der Geschichte.”

Martino is the night guardian of the Mole, the Turin Museum of Cinema. But for him it's not just a job. From midnight on he considers himself the master of the place. He lives by watching the old silent movies until day comes, then he retires in an abandoned office of the building to spend the rest of the day. The Angel is a small thief from the outskirts of the city. He likes cars and girls. This does not make Amanda, his girlfriend, very happy. She would like to lead a regular life and she works hard to leave her tough neighborhood, but she is afraid she never will. One day Amanda gets into trouble and, while running from the police, finds shelter in the Mole. Martino and Amanda could not be more different. He is used to loneliness – and now he has to share his pad with a girl. On the other hand, she never thought a dreamland like the Mole could exist. Slowly, something happens between them. But then it's time for the Angel to go find his girlfriend. Davide Ferrario: ”After Midnight is a gentle little movie about a very peculiar place. It's also an act of love for the movies – and Buster Keaton in particular. It was made with very little money, in a short time and with a lot of enthusiasm. Probably on account of that, it's one of my most personal pictures. There's actually not more I should say. Just sit down, open your eyes and go with the stream of the story.”
